Does anyone know what this is? I know the translation but I can't determine the what, when, where or why of it.

There is such a diverse group here, education and culture wise, that I hoped someone would recognize it.

I have never heard of "Hirth" Engines, so I have no clue what to what kind of engine this badge was attached to.
Sorry

I do know that my grandmother was a riveter during WWII, this was in her stuff. Hirth started building plane engines in the 20's but I really doubt she was helping build German planes back then!

Maybe she got it from a plane that was shot-down and she kept it as a souvenir?
What is a "riveter"?

could it be then that parts from german planes were reused?

Ooh. I would hate to think that, it would mean only one way of getting the parts to reuse!!!
Good link teddybearcholla, that means the tag dates to pre-war! I would still like to know what the number is, maybe it could tell me what part it came from. Time to research!

MGiff to me they look like tags that go with large type split pins. These pins are ed into various parts of engines to stop those parts from moving during transportation or storage.
